On a recent gorgeous spring day, the Serenbe community celebrated MayDay with nearly 600 guests. Over 30 vendors (including The Farmhouse restaurant, Bella Cucina, Tiffany Mooring, Sweetwater Brewery, EcoMeme, Harris & Clark, Synergy Fitness, Olive Boutique, and more) lined Selborne Lane, artist Matt Janke demonstrated glass blowing outside StudioSwan art gallery, Southern rock band the Helicon Prophets performed during the day, and the legendary Col. Bruce Hampton took the stage in the late afternoon. Scroll to the bottom of this newsletter for some great photos from the day, courtesy of Frank Mullen (for Ben Rose Photography) and farms manager (and fantastic photographer!) Paige Witherington.
The MayDay celebration was the culmination of a week of events that promoted environmental awareness and “green living,” which kicked off on Earth Day. Dr. Howard Frumkin from the CDC came to the community to discuss climate change and how it affects our health. Following his lecture, the Serenbe environmental committee presented a plan to help make Serenbe a carbon neutral community—residents are now calculating their carbon impact (using the calculator on EcoMeme.com) and making simple yet significant changes such as switching from regular lightbulbs to compact fluorescent ones, using their “Serenbe Green Bags” (which are available for purchase at the Serenbe Farmers’ Markets for $4) instead of paper or plastic, and buying local, organic produce whenever possible.
On Tuesday, a small group of Serenbe residents invited about 40 “emerging environmentalists” to a forum to discuss ways this group of people could have a positive impact on the environment. Representatives from several important Atlanta businesses and organizations were present, and this potentially powerful group is meeting again in June.
Another highlight was a visit from Arden Zinn, founder of local juice business Arden’s Garden, who shared her secrets to lifelong health and wellness. Popular artist Matt Janke demonstrated glass blowing outside StudioSwan art gallery.

3Serenbe resident and owner of EcoMeme.com, Pam Hollis, debuted a few of the environmentally
friendly items she’ll sell in her store, scheduled to open this summer in Serenbe.

sold their beautiful hand-crafted birdhouses.

Students from the Hill Country Montessori School led other
kids in maypole dancing and games.

The legendary Col. Bruce Hampton brought amazingly
talented musicians with him, making for a spectacular show.

Serenbe residents and friends gathered on the deck of a
townhome for a bird’s-eye view of the action.

Families had a great time just relaxing and enjoying a day in the country.

Kids especially liked taking part in activities at the Hill Country Montessori
and LaGrange Art Museum booths, and taking part in the chalk drawing contest.

Steve Farace of Sweetwater Brewery was there with the
tie-dyed Sweetwater truck, and plenty of his product.

the shopping bags
are to be used instead of paper or plastic, and have “10 Ways to Be Green” printed on the back.
