We are excited to announce the opening of The Hil restaurant, Harris & Clark Thoughtful Grocery and Food School, and Gloriosa Style event design firm and tabletop shop; all located in Serenbe’s Selborne community, on Selborne Lane.

The Hil’s executive chef/owner is Hilary White, formerly of 103 West and the first female chef hired by Pano Karatassos for the Buckhead Life Restaurant Group. Hilary’s husband, Jim White, returned to the restaurant business to serve as the owner/operator for The Hil.  Also, Hilary’s mother, Sandy Pitsch, joined her family as the restaurant’s dining room manager. The Hil’s menu is highly seasonal and often changes, as many of the ingredients used are fresh from the Serenbe Organic Farms.  Says Chef White, “The farm-to-table concept is very important to me, and I heavily rely on what’s growing on the Serenbe Organic Farms for ingredients. It’s inspiring to have such an incredible farm in my restaurant’s backyard.”

Renowned designer Stan Topol, who also worked with Serenbe founder Steve Nygren when he operated the Peasant Restaurant Group, created The Hil’s interiors. The space features a lobby area with fireplace, bookshelves and comfortable seating.  The bar features black and white photography by Greg Newington, a celebrated photographer from Australia and Serenbe resident.  The dining room is accented by artwork from local artists (including soon-to-be Serenbe resident Rob Brinson), plus found objects from France and reclaimed windows from Agnes Scott College. Windows create exceptional views of Serenbe, and patio seating is perfect for sunset watching. Look for an amazing story on The Hil in the October issue of Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles magazine www.atlantahomesmag.com.  The Hil is open for dinner Wednesday though Sunday (5 – 9 p.m.), and for brunch (11 a.m. - 3 p.m.) on Saturday and Sunday.  Full bar and wine list now available. To make a reservation, call 770.463.6040.

Just up the street from The Hil and adjacent to the Blue Eyed Daisy Bakeshop are Gloriosa Style and Harris & Clark Thoughtful Grocery & Food School. Harris & Clark, owned by James and Anissa Harris, is stocked with all-natural and organic foods like locally-made honey and granola, bread, yogurt, delicious meats and fabulous cheeses, and gourmet olive oils; fresh produce from the Serenbe Organic Farms; penny candy, ice cream, and other sweet treats.   There are “green” everyday items like paper towels, dish detergent, and personal care items. Serenbe residents often pop in to stock up on grocery items and pick up a gift—products include Archipelago body care, Caldrea kitchen products, Pre de Provence bath products, cool housewares, picnic baskets, linens, metrocarts, and more. Harris & Clark is hosting regular food school events—see the events listing below for the scoop.  Visit www.harrisclark.com  for more information.

Gloriosa Style event design firm and tabletop shop opened with a celebration at the Inn at Serenbe.  The Gloriosa team and president Keith Robinson hosted “Signature Style:  An Event Exposition,” which highlighted breathtaking event possibilities around the magical Inn grounds, culminating in a reception in the lake pavilion.  The Atlantan magazine’s new bridal book, launching in December, was the media sponsor and captured some great shots from the event — click here to see the album.  In addition to being the exclusive event designer for events at The Inn at Serenbe, Gloriosa also has a shop in the community—the space is stocked with gorgeous pieces to transform any tabletop into a work of art.  For more information, visit www.gloriosadesign.com.

If you haven’t visited us in a while, please do so soon.  Have dinner at The Farmhouse (which is featured in the October issue of Gourmet magazine), the Blue Eyed Daisy Bakeshop, or The Hil.  See an exhibition at StudioSwan art gallery. Shop at Harris & Clark and Gloriosa.  Stay in the Inn at Serenbe.  It would be our pleasure to have you here.

Stay tuned for more businesses opening soon (including Goode’s for the Home and EcoMeme eco-lifestyle boutique)…

Looking forward to seeing you at Serenbe.

From Serenbe resident Sam Harrison

“There’s much to be said for eating the awesome local foods provided by our Serenbe Organic Farms manager Paige Witherington, her staff and other nearby farmers. We all know local, organic foods taste better (I’m already grieving that summer’s tomatoes are about gone) and they’re considerably more nutritious. But it’s also important to remember we’re helping the environment when we don’t have to buy foods shipped in by fuel-guzzling, refrigerated vehicles.

In her new book, “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle,” Barbara Kingsolver points out that if every US citizen ate just one meal a week — any meal — composed of locally and organically raised produce and meats, we would reduce the country’s oil consumption  by over 1.1 million barrels of oil every week.”

For more information on eating local, visit www.buylocalgeorgia.org.

Sam Harrison is a speaker, teacher and author (“IdeaSpotting: How to Find your Next Great Idea”; “Zing! Five Steps and 101 Tips for Creativity on Command”).  He and his wife, Hope, have lived in Serenbe for nearly a year.
